Ingredients
  

For the Beans
  • 2 cups Navy Beans or Great Northern/Pinto, drained and rinsed
  • 2 cups Water add more if too thick
For the Flavor Base
  • 4 slices Thick-Cut Bacon substitute with smoked sausage for vegetarian
  • 2 tablespoons Neutral Oil Canola/Veggie/Avocado
  • 1 medium Yellow Onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 medium Green Bell Pepper diced small
The Sweet and Smoky Mix
  • 1 cup Ketchup or tomato sauce
  • 1 cup Barbecue Sauce adjust to taste
  • 1/4 cup Molasses or honey/agave
  • 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar adjust to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Yellow Mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce use vegetarian version if needed
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika or regular paprika
The Seasoning Squad
  • 1 teaspoon Chili Powder adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Salt adjust to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar or white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Hot Sauce to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke optional, use sparingly

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Drain and rinse the navy beans thoroughly under cold water.
  3. In a large skillet, cook the chopped thick-cut bacon until crispy (5-7 minutes).
  4. Sauté finely diced onion and bell pepper in the reserved bacon fat for about 5 minutes.
  5. Reduce heat, stir in ketchup, barbecue sauce, molasses, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, chili powder, black pepper, and salt. Add ½ cup of water and let simmer for 3-5 minutes.
  6. Gently fold the rinsed navy beans into the sauce mixture, incorporating all components.
  7. Transfer to a baking dish if skillet isn't oven-safe and bake uncovered for 35-45 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the dish rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
