Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) if baking chocolate cake from scratch. Bake for 30-40 minutes and cool before slicing.
  2. Wash and pit fresh cherries or drain canned cherries. Slice fresh cherries in half for the trifle.
  3. In a chilled mixing bowl, whip 1 cup of heavy cream until soft peaks form. Optionally add powdered sugar.
  4. In a trifle dish, layer chocolate cake, followed by cherries and whipped cream. Repeat until ingredients are used.
  5. Finish with a layer of whipped cream and sprinkle chocolate shavings on top.
  6. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
