Ingredients

For the Tofu
  • 14 oz Extra-firm Tofu Choose vacuum-sealed to avoid excess liquid.
  • 1/2 cup Cornstarch Can substitute with arrowroot starch.
  • 1 cup Panko Breadcrumbs Regular breadcrumbs are an option but will change the texture.
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder Adjust according to taste preferences.
For the Bang Bang Sauce
  • 1/2 cup Vegan Mayonnaise Any plant-based mayo works.
  • 1 tbsp Sriracha Can substitute with sweet chili sauce for milder heat.
  • 2 tbsp White Sugar Maple syrup can be used as substitute.
  • 1 tsp Salt Opt for sea salt or kosher salt.

Equipment

  • Oven
  • mixing bowl
  • baking sheet
  • Kitchen towel
  • Heavy Object

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Start by removing excess moisture from the extra-firm tofu. Wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for about 5 minutes.
  2. Once pressed, unwrap the tofu and cut it into 1-inch cubes.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400ºF (200ºC). This high temperature is essential for achieving a crunchy exterior.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornstarch, panko breadcrumbs, and garlic powder. Toss the cubed tofu pieces gently in this mixture until they are evenly coated.
  5. Spread the coated tofu cubes on a parchment-lined baking sheet in a single layer. Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes, flipping them halfway through.
  6. While the tofu is baking, whisk together the vegan mayonnaise, sriracha, white sugar, and salt in a separate bowl. Adjust consistency with water if needed.
  7. Once the tofu is perfectly baked, let it cool for a minute, then toss it in the Bang Bang sauce until each piece is coated.
  8. Serve your crispy Bang Bang Tofu over rice, in a wrap, or alone as a flavorful appetizer.
