Ingredients

For the Dip Base
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted Butter Adds richness and flavor; can substitute with all olive oil.
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil Helps to prevent burning and adds depth.
  • 8 ounces Cream Cheese Ensure it’s softened for easy blending.
  • ½ cup Sour Cream Offers tanginess; Greek yogurt can substitute for a healthy twist.
  • ¼ cup Mayonnaise Contributes to the creamy texture; can be replaced with more sour cream.
For the Flavor
  • 3 medium Yellow Onions Use medium-thick slices for the sweetest caramelization.
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar Aids caramelization and enhances sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder Elevates flavor depth; fresh minced garlic works well too.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce Adds umami richness; omit for a vegetarian version.
For Garnish
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Chives Adds a fresh onion flavor; perfect for sprinkling on top.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Caramelized Onion Dip
  1. In a large skillet, melt the butter and oil over medium heat until the butter begins to foam but not brown.
  2. Add the sliced yellow onions to the skillet, stirring to coat them in the butter and oil, and cook for about 5 minutes until softened.
  3. Sprinkle sugar over the onions and lower the heat to medium-low, stirring occasionally and cooking for 40 to 60 minutes.
  4. Once caramelized, remove from heat and let cool slightly before roughly chopping the onions.
  5. In a mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise, and blend until smooth.
  6. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder, then fold in the chopped caramelized onions.
  7. Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and garnish with fresh chives if desired. Serve immediately or chill before serving.
